Abstract

This paper is a reflection on the cultural-political category of Amefricanity, created by Brazilian intellectual and activism Lélia Gonzalez in the 1980s. Considering that Latin America is one of the most important cultural categories in the US today, this reflection stems from the question: what is the political potential of this cultural category? In an attempt to answer this question, the paper revisit Gonzalez’s theorization to arrive at a redefinition of Amefricanity as a cultural-political utopia, which has the potential to mobilize imagined communities capable to picture collective actions of resistance to authoritarian Western narratives.
